Stray Paws Animal Rescue and Welfare’s sterilization clinics are a core component of their efforts to combat the pet overpopulation crisis and improve animal welfare within Durban’s townships, such as Welbedacht, Umlazi, and Kwa-Dabeka.
The organization prioritizes this work directly in these high-need areas instead of relying on traditional shelters.
Key Aspects of the Sterilization Program
* Mobile Clinics: Stray Paws brings fully equipped mobile clinics directly into the township areas to host mass sterilization drives.
* High Volume: These drives are high-impact, with clinics capable of sterilizing a large number of animals (reported to be up to 150 animals in a single day).
* Comprehensive Care: In addition to sterilization, animals brought to the clinics typically receive vaccinations, deworming, and medical attention for minor illnesses, providing essential veterinary care often inaccessible to residents in these areas.
* Goal: The primary objective is to humanely reduce the overwhelming number of stray and suffering animals by controlling reproduction and curbing the spread of diseases and starvation.
* Community Integration: Sterilization drives work alongside their Township Feeding Project (which helps build trust with animals) and Township Animal Education Programs, which teach responsible pet ownership and the importance of empathy and proper care to the community.
